New York's left-leaning Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has publicly criticized an unnamed "senior Democrat" in the House who, following an assassination attempt on Donald Trump, reportedly predicted Trump's victory in the 2024 election.
The incident occurred at a rally in Pennsylvania, where Trump narrowly escaped death. The anonymous Democrat was quoted by Axios as saying, "We've all resigned ourselves to a second Trump presidency."
According to the New York Post, the call for President Biden, aged 81, to abandon his re-election campaign has grown louder in the wake of his lackluster debate performance against Trump last month. Some commentators argue that Trump's display of resilience post-shooting, including a defiant fist pump while blood flowed down his face, further highlighted the stark contrast between the two political figures.
However, Ocasio-Cortez did not hold back in her response to the Democrat's forecast, urging the unidentified Congress member to "retire." She stated, "If you're a 'senior Democrat' that feels this way, you should absolutely retire and make space for true leadership that refuses to resign themselves to fascism." She further criticized the unnamed Democrat's approach, labeling it as "functionally useless to the American people."
The assailant, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, targeted Trump, 78, during his campaign rally in Butler. Stationed on a nearby rooftop, Crooks managed to hit Trump on the upper ear with one bullet, while another tragically claimed the life of a rally attendee. Secret Service agents swiftly neutralized Crooks.
Despite the shocking incident, Ocasio-Cortez extended her well-wishes to Trump, stating, "There is no place for political violence, including the horrific incident we just witnessed in Pennsylvania. It is absolutely unacceptable and must be denounced in the strongest terms. My heart goes out to all the victims and I wish the former President a speedy recovery."
Trump is scheduled to attend the Republican National Convention on Monday, where he is anticipated to deliver a message of "unity."
