New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has expressed unwavering support for President Joe Biden, despite the apparent exodus of her colleagues from the presidential bandwagon.
In a recent interaction with the press, Ocasio-Cortez confirmed her conversation with the President, stating, "I have spoken to him extensively," and emphasized his commitment to the race.
According to The Post Millennial, Ocasio-Cortez's affirmation of support comes at a time when many of her House colleagues are reportedly exploring alternatives to Biden on the Democrat ticket, urging him to step aside. Vice President Kamala Harris, who was present at the Essence Awards in New Orleans over the weekend, is speculated to be a potential successor should Biden withdraw from his pursuit of a second term.
In a bid to consolidate his position, Biden issued a letter to Congressional Democrats on Monday, urging them to rally around him in the fight against Donald Trump. "I am firmly committed to staying in this race," he declared, "to running this race to the end, and to beating Donald Trump." Ocasio-Cortez was referring to this letter when she said, "He has reiterated that to the public. Joe Biden is our nominee. He is not leaving this race. He is in this race and I support him."
Ocasio-Cortez also highlighted the importance of focusing on the November elections, given that Biden is up against Trump, who she pointed out has 34 felony convictions. "Because he is running against Donald Trump, who is a man with 34 felony convictions that has committed 34 felony crimes and not a single Republican has asked Donald Trump to not be the nominee."
The 34 crimes Ocasio-Cortez referred to involve a series of invoices, checks, and receipts issued by or given to Trump's former attorney, Michael Cohen. These were recorded as "legal fees" in bookkeeping records. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg alleges that these payments were not for legal services but reimbursements to the attorney. He further contends that these bookkeeping entries constitute falsified business records, a misdemeanor in New York. Bragg also accuses Trump of intentionally misleading with these records to influence the 2020 election, arguing that Trump would not have won if it had been known he was accused of having an affair with a porn star.
Ocasio-Cortez further emphasized her commitment to winning the November elections and outlined what she believes the president and the White House should do to ensure victory. "What's critically important is what the president, I believe, that the president needs to do, and I have communicated this, what the president and the White House should do in order to make sure that we win in November."
She identified key issues such as Medicare expansion, Social Security, and providing "relief" for rents and mortgages. "If we can do that and continue our work on student loans, secure a ceasefire and bring those dollars back to investing in public policy, then that's how we win in November. That's what I'm committed to and that's what I want to make sure that we secure," she concluded.
