In a chilling incident that unfolded in Manhattan last week, a woman's life was brutally cut short, her body discovered concealed in a sleeping bag.
The victim, identified as 31-year-old Zameen Williams, had been shot in the head before her body was callously wrapped in plastic and stowed away in a sleeping bag, as per police reports.
As reported by The Independent, the gruesome discovery was made on 27th Street between Second and Third avenues, just before 5 p.m. on Friday. The police have since arrested a man, Chad Irish, 55, from Bronx, charging him with concealing a human corpse. Surveillance footage revealed a man, seated in an electric wheelchair, dragging the body bag, which was later discarded with the trash on the street, according to eyewitness accounts.
The police apprehended a person of interest from his residence on Monday, amidst a crowd of onlookers who hurled accusations of "murderer" at him. The man, handcuffed to an EMS gurney, was assaulted by the crowd, which included the victim's mother, Nicole Williams. A video of the incident shows the police attempting to hold back the crowd, but to no avail. Amidst the chaos, Nicole Williams could be heard screaming, "you killed my daughter."
Despite the man pleading his innocence, the crowd continued their assault, even as medics attempted to transport him to an ambulance. The police confirmed that he was taken to a local hospital in stable condition, with the investigation still ongoing.
The medical examiner's office confirmed that Williams died from a gunshot wound to the head. Her family, still reeling from the shock, remembered her as a compassionate individual who aspired to advocate for women. "She was beautiful, she was sweet, she was college-educated, she was just a good person," said Nisha Ramirez, the victims aunt.
Nicole Williams shared that her daughter had recently started a new job with the city, where she was tasked with assisting the homeless. They had plans to celebrate Nicole's birthday together in the coming weeks. "I was so excited for her and so excited to spend my birthday with her, but now Im not, my baby is gone," a distraught Williams said.
A memorial has been set up by the victim's loved ones at the location where her body was found, with demands for justice echoing through the streets. The relationship between the victim and the man in the wheelchair remains unclear, but it is believed that they were acquainted.
