The special counsel appointed by Joe Biden's Department of Justice has issued a subpoena for Mike Pence to appear in the investigation of ex-President Donald Trumps classified documents case.
Pence recently announced that he had discovered classified documents in his possession.
Jack Smith, leading the special counsel, has not yet released the subpoena to the public, making it unclear what is being sought with the legal measure. According to a source reported by ABC News, "it follows months of negotiations between federal prosecutors and Pence's legal team."
Smith was appointed in November to investigate Trump's possession of classified information, which is speculated to have been taken to his Mar-a-Lago estate when departing the White House in January 2021.
Joe Biden has been accused of taking classified documents from his time as Vice President and Senator. These documents were found in his residence in Delaware and his offices at the Biden Center, which is heavily funded by outside sources in China, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey.
The subpoena issued by Smith marks an intensification of the Biden administration's efforts to build a case against Trump. The FBI conducted a raid into Trump's estate in August, and federal agents came away with considerable amounts of purported documents, including newspaper stories, press clippings, and empty folders.
ABC's request for comment was not answered by either Vice President Pence or the special counsel.
