An Air Force special operations airman has died after plunging from the rafters of the Alamodome during a pregame demonstration at a University of Texas at San Antonio football game.
The airman slipped while rappelling from the roof of the stadium ahead of UTSAs matchup against Navy and plunged to the ground, in full view of thousands of stunned spectators, according to the New York Post. The service member was participating in the schools Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans game, an event intended to honor Americas military rather than expose them to unnecessary risk in a public spectacle.
The airman, assigned to the 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2, was mortally injured during a pregame demonstration that was supposed to showcase elite military skills. Videos circulating on social media appeared to show the airman losing control and sliding down the rope during a fast-rope demonstration involving four military personnel.
He received emergency medical treatment on the field for roughly 10 minutes as stunned fans looked on. The airman was then rushed to a local hospital, where he died, turning what should have been a patriotic tribute into a sobering reminder of the real dangers faced by those who serve.
