An Indian pilot who survived a brutal midair knife attack has described how he forced open a cockpit door while gravely wounded, giving passengers the chance to overpower an alleged hijacker aboard a FlyDubai flight.

According to Just The News, Captain Smit Machchhar recounted the ordeal to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, explaining that he had been stabbed multiple times yet still managed to crawl to the cockpit door and release the latch, enabling Israelis on board to intervene. The 17-year veteran pilot recalled, I was fighting for my life. I had suffered so many wounds that I had fallen down. But when I was lying down there, I could hear that the aircraft was going down. I knew absolutely that this was one last push, if Smit could do it," as reported in the interview.

Even as the attacker continued stabbing him, Machchhar said he just opened the cockpit door, at which point other individuals rushed in to subdue the assailant. Bleeding on the cabin floor, he said he drew strength from his Hindu faith, underscoring the role of personal belief and courage when institutions and protocols are not enough.

The incident unfolded Wednesday when a knife-wielding pilot on the commercial flight allegedly turned on a fellow pilot, causing the jet to plunge an estimated 16,000 feet before an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia, according to multiple news reports. The episode highlights both the vulnerability of civilian aviation to insider threats and the decisive role of individual braveryqualities often overlooked in a world that increasingly trusts bureaucracy over personal responsibility.
