Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) used a CNN appearance to accuse President Donald Trump of plotting continuing efforts to try to rig this election, reviving a familiar Democrat narrative that casts routine election-security measures as existential threats to democracy.
As reported by Breitbart, Van Hollen joined CNNs The Arena after host Kasie Hunt highlighted a Supreme Court ruling allowing the administration to access a federal database designed to provide information about the citizenship status of voters.
Hunt noted that there is a time horizon that makes it seem that they cannot use this in a broad way for the midterm elections, but they may be able to use it in a targeted way, and asked, What kind of implications does that have for this election?
Van Hollen responded by claiming, there are really two issues, as you all were discussing, and immediately raised alarms about privacy, saying, One is the threat to privacy of sensitive information on every Americans Social Security numbers and other things.
He argued that thats why this database has not been allowed to be expanded in that way, insisting, The concern is that it will be used to exclude American citizens from voting, because the database is, you know, not perfect.
The Maryland Democrat added, And we dont want this database to be used to prevent American citizens from voting, while conceding, Now, maybe in this coming election it wont be as big a problem.
He escalated his rhetoric by asserting, But the fact that Donald Trump wants to do this is a continuing threat to our democracy and the right of American citizens to vote, and warning, And we should be worried about all of Donald Trumps shenanigans.
Van Hollen attacked the SAVE Act, a Republican-backed measure aimed at tightening voter-roll integrity, saying, They tried to pass the SAVE Act, which we stopped in the Senate, which would make it much harder for American citizens to vote.
He further claimed, Of course, he tried to prevent the post office from delivering mail-in ballots, before acknowledging, The court struck that down, but we can expect continuing efforts by Donald Trump to try to rig this election.
