Texas Democratic Senate hopeful James Talarico is attempting to upstage Republicans gathering in Dallas this week by staging a food drive aimed at highlighting soaring grocery prices.
The event is timed to coincide with the opening of the Republican midterm convention in the city, according to Just The News. Talarico plans to use a large warehouse near the convention site as both a collection hub and a backdrop for media interviews.
Billionaire mega-donors and their puppet politicians will gather at a convention in Dallas to clink champagne glasses and toast their own corruption," Talarico told the outlet last week. "Theyre paying $20,000 for entry to a Billionaire Ball celebrating corrupt tariffs, billionaire tax breaks, and a new forever war that are all driving grocery costs through the roof."
"Well be doing something different," he continued. "Were bringing Republicans, Democrats, and Independents together to collect groceries for our neighbors who have been screwed over by corrupt politicians. His campaign said it will mobilize volunteers to collect, sort, and donate groceries for middle-class Texans struggling with the high price of groceries."
While Talarico seeks to cast Republicans as beholden to wealthy donors, the convention itself is poised to showcase the partys populist energy and policy agenda. President Donald Trump is scheduled to address attendees on both nights of the midterm gathering, and Vice President JD Vance will deliver the keynote address on Thursday.
The Dallas event marks the first midterm convention of its kind for the GOP, underscoring the partys effort to rally voters around concerns such as inflation, border security, and government overreach.
