Mikie Sherrill is facing renewed scrutiny after a violent crash involving an illegal immigrant and the wife of a local mayor intensified criticism of the states sanctuary-style restrictions on cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
According to Western Journal, Sherrills administration has erected a bureaucratic barrier that sharply limits coordination between local law enforcement and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a policy her opponents argue directly contributed to the latest incident. They contend that by blocking routine cooperation, the governor has effectively forced ICE agents into more dangerous field operations, increasing the likelihood of high-speed pursuits and collateral damage on New Jerseys roads.
The most recent case unfolded when an illegal immigrant, attempting to evade ICE agents, slammed into a vehicle carrying Penelope Cohen, the wife of Democratic East Brunswick Mayor Brad Cohen. The crash has become a flashpoint in the broader debate over New Jerseys sanctuary posture and the public-safety consequences of prioritizing progressive immigration policies over enforcement.
Republican state Assemblyman Paul Kanitra argued that a cooperative framework between state and federal authorities would have prevented the chase from escalating into a life-threatening situation. This is just the latest in a long line of traffic incidents and vehicular incidents that wouldnt occur if New Jersey didnt have our sanctuary status that got codified as soon as Gov. Sherrill came into office, he said.
Kanitra emphasized that Republicans had warned from the outset that codifying sanctuary policies would undermine order and endanger residents. We all fought against it. We told them that this would create chaos, and it seems like Democrats are unable to take accountability for their own actions.
He accused Democrats of refusing even to acknowledge the disorder their policies have produced, preferring instead to deflect responsibility. He said Democrats are unable to even recognize the chaos that theyre creating, and theyre shouting and screaming at everybody else trying to find somebody to blame.
Its somewhat ridiculous, he added. For Kanitra, the pattern of incidents involving illegal immigrants behind the wheel is no coincidence but a predictable outcome of a system that signals leniency rather than law and order.
You kind of reap what you sow, he said, recalling a separate tragedy in his own district in which a child was killed by an illegal immigrant driver. They got behind the wheel, and they wound up killing an innocent toddler in the process, he said.
ICE officials, for their part, laid out how the confrontation escalated once the suspect chose to flee, stressing that agents were operating without the benefit of local police support. After repeated verbal warnings and due to officer safety concerns, ICE officers relied on their training and attempted to safely remove the illegal alien [from their car]. The illegal alien then proceeded to flee at a high rate of speed and collided with other vehicles, an ICE representative said.
Republican state Sen. Mike Testa said the episode underscores the dangers of sidelining federal immigration enforcement in favor of politically fashionable sanctuary policies. I think it has only emboldened illegal aliens to engage in illegal behavior. This illegal alien was stopped lawfully by federal authorities, ran through a red light, fleeing federal authorities and unfortunately ran into the mayor of East Brunswicks wife, he said.
Local officials have been eager to clarify the role of municipal police in the incident, mindful of public concern over both safety and accountability. North Brunswick Mayor Francis Womack stressed that his department had no part in the federal stop that preceded the crash involving Penelope Cohen, according to My Central Jersey.
I want to make it clear to our residents that the North Brunswick Police Department was not involved in the federal operation or the attempted motor vehicle stop, Womack said. North Brunswick police officers became involved only after the motor vehicle crash occurred, responding to the scene to address the crash and related public safety matters.
Womack acknowledged that any federal law enforcement activity on local streets can unsettle residents and fuel speculation about what transpired. We understand that an incident involving federal law enforcement activity in our community can raise questions and concerns among residents, Womack said. The township is providing this information to clarify the role of our local police department and to ensure the public has accurate information regarding what occurred.
For conservatives, the crash is not an isolated misfortune but part of a broader pattern in which sanctuary-style policies elevate ideological signaling over the basic duty of government to protect its citizens. As New Jersey families absorb yet another preventable tragedy tied to illegal immigration, pressure is mounting on Sherrill and her fellow Democrats to explain why shielding illegal immigrants from cooperation with ICE should take precedence over the safety of law-abiding residents on the states roads.
