Democrat Senate hopeful Angie Nixon of Florida, who has been scrambling to obscure her ties to the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), inadvertently revealed her radical sympathies while stumping in a Miami church.
According to Gateway Pundit, Nixon, an active DSA member now attempting to rebrand herself for a statewide audience, drew on the words of convicted cop-killer and communist Assata Shakur, who escaped U.S. custody and fled to Cuba. Breitbart News reports that Nixon is still pulling quotes from Marxist cop killer Assata Shakur, although conveniently leaving out the origins of her words now that she secured her nomination and is trying to appeal to general election voters.
Addressing the congregation, Nixon declared, We have nothing to lose but our chains. She went on to define those chains in explicitly redistributionist terms, railing against spending priorities and private education.
Our chains are them telling us that we dont have enough money for health care for all when theyre spending a billion dollars on a ballroom youll never get to dance in. Our chains are the fact that they are spending money to defeat ballot initiatives that you paid into that should have gone toward health care for low-income kids, she said.
Continuing her class-warfare rhetoric, Nixon added, Our chains are the fact that they are closing public schools so that they can subsidize their for-profit private school education for the billionaires and the millionaires, but theyre closing schools in our neighborhood, stressing, Those are our chains. Left-wing activists and academics have long celebrated Shakur as a revolutionary icon, and Nixons uncritical borrowing from that legacy underscores how deeply such ideology has penetrated the modern Democrat Party.
Yet for all the fiery language, Nixon offered no concrete policy blueprint, only familiar progressive grievances and slogans. To many conservative voters, her remarks will sound less like a serious governing agenda and more like the same tired, leftist talking points that have failed communities for decades.
