Pro-MAGA commentator Caroline Sunshine sharply rebuked Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on CNN, urging him to abandon campaign-style appearances and public-relations flyovers in favor of visiting American troops wounded in the Iran war.
The clash unfolded during a panel segment on Pentagon turmoil after reports that Hegseth abruptly dismissed Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George, allegedly soon after the general was ordered to halt an inquiry into an Army helicopter flyover near singer Kid Rocks residence.
According to Mediaite, that episode is only the latest in a series of senior-level exits under Hegseth that have created significant vacancies throughout the militarys leadership ranks.
Fellow MAGA-aligned pundit Jason Rantz stepped in to defend Hegseths judgment on the flyover, insisting the spectacle could actually bolster the armed forces.
Rantz argued that the stunt was cool and might aid recruitment, even as he conceded it may be not the right thing optic-wise.
Right now hes incredibly popular amongst troops. We see recruitment going up and recruitment has been going up since they took over because of this. We may not like it, but the reality is thats cool. People look at that and they like that and thats a recruitment tool, he said.
Sunshine, however, cut him off, shifting the focus from optics to accountability and the human cost of the Iran conflict.
I think it would be great if you could ask Pete Hegseth about this, but unfortunately the Pentagon has not held a press briefing since May 5, Sunshine said, blasting what she framed as a culture of secrecy at the Defense Department.
And since then, we have found out that we have 774 wounded soldiers as a result of [the Iran] war. And the Pentagon has not come out and answered questions about it, from a president, by the way, who is out there every day taking questions from the press every day on tarmacs here, there. The Pentagon needs to follow that posture, she added, contrasting the Pentagons silence with President Donald Trumps media accessibility.
Sunshine then turned to Hegseths August 17 trip to the Iowa State Fair, where the defense secretary publicly praised Republican Rep. Zach Nunn.
And Pete needs to stop going to Iowa to campaign for Republican congressmen, and maybe he should go visit the bedsides of those 774 wounded that would be serving the military and the president better than hes doing right now.
Her remarks underscored a growing conservative concern that the Pentagons leadership is more focused on political theater than on transparency and the welfare of injured service members.
For many on the right, the question now is whether Hegseth will recalibrate his priorities toward the core mission of defending the nation and honoring the sacrifices of those who bear the cost of war.
