Democrat Senate hopeful Angie Nixon is openly vowing to restore Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) mandates in Florida, casting Republicans as racially motivated authoritarians for opposing the controversial ideology.
According to Breitbart, Nixon, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America who nonetheless denies being a socialist, has aligned herself with a slate of hard-left priorities that go well beyond traditional Democratic talking points. She backs abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), granting rapid amnesty to illegal aliens, imposing universal government-run health care, and reinstating DEI frameworks that conservatives argue institutionalize race-based preferences.
You definitely just have to work to level the playing field, and you gotta get these. You gotta close these corporate tax loopholes. You you have to put the DEI policies back in place, the Florida House member said in a recent interview, making clear that bureaucratic equity regimes are central to her agenda. And then you actually have to just make sure that you are passing policies that work to level the playing field. I dont think theres anything wrong with DEI with leveling the playing field. Why do we not want people to start at the same point and have access to everything? she continued, explicitly championing equity rather than equal treatment under the law.
Her rhetoric reflects a broader socialist framing that treats disparities in outcome as proof of systemic injustice, demanding government intervention to engineer fair results. Just because youre giving me a little bit of access to certain things doesnt make it whole for like generations of trauma, generations of living in poverty. Its gonna take me 20 more years or whatever to like get caught up just based on like my family history, right? she asserted, arguing that present-day policy must compensate for ancestral grievances. And so, you know, I just would have to definitely say we got to stop the rollbacks of these anti-DEI measures and that type of thing, Nixon added, condemning recent conservative reforms.
Nixon has previously complained that it totally sucks that Florida teachers can no longer be trained in DEI, a change enacted by Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Republican legislature to keep ideological activism out of classrooms. She accuses DeSantis and the GOP of targeting woke not to protect educational standards or individual merit, but to suppress minorities whom she claims are on the verge of political dominance.
Ron DeSantis had this attack on woke, this stop woke, because he wants people sleeping. He wants to ban the ability for us to go out and protest the way in which we can wake people up and do mass protests and mass mobilizations, trying to make it so that people could run folks over in the street if they blocked the street while they were protesting, and it is them attempting to stay in power and control, she said, leveling extreme accusations against state leaders who have sought to restore public order. Nixon insists Republicans are clinging to authority because they realize that theres a new rising majority of like black folks, like Latinos, people of color, women, folks whove been marginalized, and they realize that we make up this new majority.
And if we come into power, they are fearful Theyre fearful that if this group comes into power, all these marginalized people, that theyre going to do to them what theyve done to many of us for hundreds of years, she claimed, casting conservatives as historically oppressive and motivated by racial panic. But history shows that thats not what happens when marginalized communities come into power, Nixon added, offering no acknowledgment of the divisive impact DEI has had in workplaces, schools, and public institutions.
Her call to resurrect DEI comes after years of work by DeSantis and Republican lawmakers to dismantle what they view as a taxpayer-funded system of ideological litmus tests and preferential treatment. In 2023, DeSantis and the GOP moved to strip DEI bureaucracies from Floridas higher education system, with the governor arguing that such programs had been used as a veneer to impose an ideological agenda on universities rather than promote genuine opportunity.
Nixons claim that Republicans oppose woke because they are threatened by minorities fits a familiar left-wing narrative that dismisses policy disagreements as evidence of bigotry. She has a record of incendiary remarks, at one point declaring she cannot work with Republicans across the aisle because they are literally trying to kill us, a posture that underscores the stark ideological divide between her socialist-inflected vision and the conservative push for colorblind law, limited government, and merit-based advancement.
