Communist Mayor Zohran Mamdanis campaign pledge of free bus service in New York City has not been implemented, but his rhetoric is already encouraging widespread fare evasion and draining the transit system of millions of dollars in revenue.

Political fantasies of costless public services are now colliding with fiscal reality, threatening to undermine the mayors broader agenda of taxpayer-funded giveaways.
FOX News reports that political promises of free buses in New York City are contributing to a spike in fare evasion that is costing the citys mass transit system millions of dollars, transit officials warn. The MTA says paid bus ridership dropped nearly 8% in June compared with the same month a year earlier. During Mamdanis first six months in office, bus fare revenue plunged by $31 million versus the first half of 2025, with agency estimates indicating that nearly half of riders now skip the $3 fare.
Mamdanis slogan of fast and free buses was a central theme of his 2025 mayoral campaign, even though the MTA is controlled by Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul and the state, not City Hall. While Mamdani and Hochul announced a July 8 initiative to prioritize faster bus routes instead of free ones, experts and union leaders argue the free bus messaging has already normalized fare evasion.

Who could have predicted this, besides every conservative in the country, that promising free services would encourage people to stop paying and strain public systems. It is not rocket science, as critics observe, its just human nature.
