Democrats in Maine are scrambling to contain the fallout after Graham Platner, the U.S. Senate hopeful forced from the race over a credible rape allegation, was tapped to headline a Labor Day event despite fierce objections from within his own party.
According to the Gateway Pundit, Platner once hailed as a rising progressive star is now at the center of a political storm that exposes deep fractures inside the Democratic Party over character, accountability, and the treatment of women. The controversy is especially awkward for prominent left-wing activist and former DNC vice chair David Hogg, who only recently championed Platner as a model candidate for disillusioned young voters.
The Hill reported in October of 2025 that a coalition of Democratic youth-focused groups endorsed oyster farmer and military veteran Graham Platner on Tuesday in the Maine Senate race to take on Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) next year. Those groups included Hoggs own Leaders We Deserve, along with Voters of Tomorrow, College Democrats of America, Gen-Z for Change and Youth Save Democracy, all rallying behind Platners economic populist pitch against the five-term Republican incumbent.
At the time, Hogg framed Platner as central to the partys future, declaring, After our historic loss in the 2024 election, conversations within the Democratic Party have rightly centered on age, the loss of young men, the working class, and the growing disillusionment of young voters, and adding, As our party charts a path forward, Graham Platner represents not the entire solution, but a vital step in the right direction. Now, with the rape allegation having ended Platners campaign, Hogg has reversed course and is publicly demanding contrition rather than a political revival.
In a recent video, Hogg insisted, Graham should not be going on any form of comeback tour, if thats what hes trying to make this. He needs to go on an apology tour. If anything. He needs to apologize to the victims of his behavior and he needs to apologize to those people that hes clearly lied to. His remarks underscore a broader Democratic panic that the Labor Day appearance will hand Republicans fresh ammunition in a race where character and trust are already front and center.
The Bangor Daily News reported that Democrats expressed confusion and frustration after activists in Hancock County announced a Labor Day rally featuring former U.S. Senate nominee Graham Platner with many in the party looking to leave him behind after a rape allegation ended his campaign. Party insiders say the move blindsided the campaign of the new nominee, former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson, just as he tries to build a national operation against Sen. Susan Collins in one of the countrys most closely watched contests.
Republicans, who have already spent weeks tying Jackson to Platner, now see their argument strengthened as Democrats struggle to distance themselves from their own chosen candidate. As one Democrat, former Maine Democratic Party Vice Chair Peggy Schaffer, bluntly put it, I dont know what they were thinking, adding, Hes not an elected official, not a union member, and hes an accused rapist.
