Arizonas Democrat Governor Katie Hobbs has selected former Mesa Mayor John Giles as her running mate, betting that a nominally bipartisan ticket will help her cling to power in a state increasingly skeptical of progressive governance.
According to One America News, Giles, who long branded himself a Republican, led MesaArizonas third-largest cityfrom 2014 until 2025, but quietly shifted his voter registration to independent on May 17th. Hobbs tapped him, forming a joint ticket as Arizona prepares to elect its first lieutenant governor, a position created by a 2022 ballot measure that now ties the fortunes of the governor and lieutenant governor together on a single ballot.
Hobbs framed the move as a high-minded appeal to unity, declaring in a video statement, Now, for the first time in our states history, we are electing a governor and lieutenant governor on the same ticket. And the first thing I looked for in a running mate was someone who shares that value of putting Arizonans ahead of partisan politics. She followed by saying, Thats why Im proud to introduce my running mate, former Mesa Mayor John Giles, presenting the partnership as a bridge across party lines even as many conservatives see it as a calculated attempt to peel off disaffected Republicans.
In their announcement video, Hobbs and Giles stressed their intention to rally Republicans, independents, and Democrats around what they called a shared commitment to putting Arizonans first. Yet Giless recent political trajectorybreaking with the GOP while aligning with national Democrats on key contestsraises questions among grassroots conservatives about whether this is genuine bipartisanship or simply another vehicle for advancing a liberal agenda under a centrist label.
Explaining his shift from the GOP to no party preference, Giles insisted, I was a lifelong Republican before becoming an independent because extremists shouldnt stand in the way of getting things done. During the 2022 midterm elections, he maintained, Ive been a Republican my whole life, adding, But Ive also been, I think, a Republican with standards. Im not an ideologue. I was always taught you vote for the best candidate, regardless of party affiliation.
Hobbs now faces a serious challenge from Representative Andy Biggs, a Republican from Arizona who previously chaired the conservative House Freedom Caucus and has served in Congress since 2017. Biggs has already solidified his own ticket, naming former Republican state Senator Sine Kerra dairy farmer by trade who was appointed in 2025 by the Trump administration to lead Arizonas Farm Service Agencysignaling a clear contrast between Hobbss establishment-friendly independent partner and a ticket rooted in traditional conservative values and alignment with President Donald Trumps America First agenda.
