Conservatives exhausted by the daily grind of confronting progressive ideology might find renewed resolve by remembering how perpetually aggrieved the left appears to be.
According to Western Journal, that dynamic was on full display this week when ESPN personality Pat McAfee became the latest target of online outrage after he appeared alongside President Donald Trump at the 2026 Patriot Games in Geneva, Ohio. The event, which featured high school athletes ages 14 to 17 in a national athletic competition celebrating the character, determination, and excellence that define the American spirit, should have been the kind of unifying celebration of youth, discipline and patriotism that Americans of all political stripes could applaud.
Instead, left-wing users on X (formerly Twitter) erupted when McAfee posted photos of himself with Trump at the competition, treating a routine public appearance as a moral transgression. From the perspective of the chronically offended left, McAfees real sin was not merely standing next to Trump, but doing so enthusiastically in support of an event he clearly believed deserved national attention.
Earlier Wednesday, McAfee had greeted Trump on the tarmac in Cleveland after Air Force One landed in a driving rainstorm, dressed casually in a T-shirt, jeans and a backward ball cap. Trump, by contrast, accepted an umbrella and remained dry, a small but telling image of a president still treated as a pariah by progressives for the crime of refusing to conform to their narrative.
Later at the Patriot Games, McAfee sat beside Trump in the stands, visibly relaxed and engaged. At one point, when a spectator shouted, We love you, Mr. President! the former NFL punter appeared to pump his fist in a brief gesture of support, a moment that further inflamed critics who view any public affirmation of Trump as beyond the pale.
McAfee then shared his enthusiasm for the event in a post on X that underscored its focus on youth, fitness and national pride. Had a BLAST celebrating high schoolers from across the country with the Heads of Disney, ABC, ESPN, and The United States Of America. Im proud of all parties getting behind this important initiative to keep future generations excited about remaining active. Cheers to the incredible contestants and to next years Patriot Games, McAfee wrote on X.
For many on the left, however, the sight of McAfee and Trump together at a patriotic, merit-based competition was intolerable, and the insults began to fly. In fact, according to Yahoo, some social media users began derisively referring to the ESPN host as MAGAfee, as though support for American high school athletes and a cordial relationship with a president were somehow disqualifying.
McAfee, to his credit, responded with humor rather than apology, refusing to bow to the online mob. Promoting American High Schoolers being active and competitive and potentially winning life changing scholarship money alongside my business partners at Disney/ABC/ESPN.. On that note I wrote and sang an entire album.. The Diary Of A Polarizing Figure AVAILABLE THIS FRIDAY, he joked, turning the lefts attempt to brand him polarizing into a marketing opportunity.
The backlash did not emerge in a vacuum, as many progressives had already marked McAfee for cancellation after a recent segment on The Pat McAfee Show. Just last week, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers used the platform to deliver a blistering critique of Anthony Fauci, the disgraced former bureaucrat whose heavy-handed COVID-era policies epitomized for many conservatives the dangers of unaccountable government power.
Episodes like this highlight why the left remains a serious cultural and political threat: not only for its policy agenda, but for the demonic glee with which many of its adherents embrace abortion and other assaults on innocent life. Yet they also reveal something deeper and more tragic about the progressive mindset, which seems locked in a cycle of resentment and perpetual offense.
Rather than asking whether the Patriot Games might have intrinsic merit as a celebration of athletic excellence, discipline and opportunity for scholarship, critics could see only Trump and those willing to stand near him. They cannot bear to ask themselves if the event McAfee and Trump promoted had merit in its own right; they can only see the event and McAfee himself filtered through their anti-Trump hatred, which transcends all.
For conservatives, the lesson is twofold: remain vigilant in keeping such destructive ideas away from the levers of power, while recognizing that those consumed by hatred of Trump and traditional American values are already paying a price in their own bitterness. Thus, even as we fight to keep them and their destructive ideas out of power, we may pity them, for the hatred and misery they feel constitute its own punishment.
