Longtime Democratic strategist James Carville may soon find himself politically homeless as his partys activist base embraces figures many Americans view as openly hostile to the country they seek to govern.
According to RedState, Carville recently warned that he would bolt the Democratic Party if radical left-wing streamer Hasan Piker gained real influence within it. If he becomes a force within the Democratic Party, I'm out of here! I have no intention of ever being in the same political party with that guy! Carville declared on Fox News, underscoring the growing divide between old-guard Democrats and the partys increasingly socialist, anti-establishment flank.
If Carville is serious, he may want to start filling out the paperwork. Recent developments in Wisconsin suggest that Piker is not only maintaining his profile on the far left, but is being openly embraced by candidates aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), a faction that has steadily pulled the party leftward on economics, culture, and foreign policy.
The most striking example is the gubernatorial campaign of Wisconsin state Rep. Francesca Hong, a DSA-backed contender who currently appears to be in a strong position heading into the August 11 Democratic primary to replace retiring Gov. Tony Evers (D). Establishment Democrats are increasingly alarmed that a Hong victory over their preferred candidatessuch as Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez, who suspended her campaign, and Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, who briefly dropped out before reentering the racecould clear a path for Trump-endorsed Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany (WI-07) to flip the governors mansion back to the GOP.
Their concern is not merely ideological but also political, rooted in the company Hong keeps and the messages that sends to swing voters in a purple state. One of Hongs most prominent allies is Hasan Piker, with whom she sat down in late June for a friendly, freewheeling conversation that quickly raised eyebrows among moderates and conservatives alike.
During that rapid-fire exchange, Hong signaled support for a slate of hard-left priorities that would be difficult to sell outside deep-blue enclaves. She backed state run grocery stores, crackdown on tech, freeing Palestine, and a statue of Scott Walker for people to destroy, a wish list that reads more like a socialist manifesto than a mainstream gubernatorial platform.
Rather than distance herself from Piker after criticism from within her own party that his extremism would be a liability in a general election, Hong has chosen to double down. Over the weekend, she appeared on the campaign trail with Piker and fellow DSA member Rep. Ilhan Omar (MN-05), another lightning rod for controversy over her past comments about the United States and its allies.

For conservatives, the optics could hardly be clearer: Francesca Hong is campaigning with Hasan Piker, a man whose rhetoric about America has long been viewed as beyond the pale. That alliance has drawn swift and pointed responses from Republican leaders who see an opportunity to frame the race as a referendum on whether Wisconsin wants to be governed by those who disparage the country itself.
Former Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) did not mince words in his reaction, drawing a direct line between Piker, Omar, and their most infamous remarks about the September 11 attacks. One said America deserved 9/11' while the other said that some people did something on 9/11 instead of acknowledging that radical Islamic terrorists killed thousands of innocent civilians. Anyone who associates with these two is too radical to hold office! Walker wrote, capturing the outrage many Americans still feel over attempts to downplay or justify that days atrocities.
Tiffany and his campaign echoed that sentiment, highlighting Hongs demeanor alongside Piker as emblematic of her ideological comfort with anti-American rhetoric. The Republican nominee sharpened the critique further in a formal statement, arguing that Hongs alliances reveal a worldview far outside Wisconsins mainstream. As Democrats wrestle internally with whether to follow the Carville wing or the PikerDSA wing, Republicans see an opening to present themselves as the party of basic patriotism and common senseand to remind Wisconsinites that embracing the far left is not just a theoretical risk, but a very real one on their November ballot.
