Some of the lefts most recognizable voices are finally admitting what conservatives have warned for years: the Democratic Party is being dragged so far to the extreme that even lifelong liberals are recoiling.
According to RedState, comedian and HBO host Bill Maher, once a reliable ally of the progressive movement, has become one of the latest high-profile figures to sound the alarm about the ideological takeover of his party. Maher has long complained that the left pilloried him from here to hell and back for the supposed offense of sitting down with President Donald Trump and for daring to question progressive orthodoxy. Just weeks ago, he openly accused Democrats of having been effectively captured by communists, not merely playing footsy with them but letting them infiltrate the opposition party.
On a recent episode of his show, Maher chose a simple but devastating tactic: he read directly from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) platform and from public statements made by its rising stars and allies. Line by line, the rhetoric echoed the familiar language of hard-left revolutionaries, from calls to seize private property to demands for control over the means of production, the very themes conservatives have been warning about for years.
One of the figures highlighted was Darializa Avila Chevalier, a socialist congressional candidate for New Yorks 13th District and aide to New York City Council member Zohran Mamdani. Mahers segment resurfaced her past comments: Yes literally abolish the border All deportation is wrong F Kamala Harris." When confronted, CHEVALIER responded dismissively: "I'm not interested in relitigating the politics of my tweets."
The Los Angeles studio audience, hardly a bastion of right-wing sentiment, reacted with audible shock as Maher read through the material. When they were not gasping, they sat in uncomfortable silence as he laid out, in the lefts own words, how DSA-backed candidates overrunning the Democratic Party are, in his view, flat-out communists.
"Donald Trump has told one trillion lies, but when he says the Democratic Socialists of America are actually communist, that's not one of them. And it's not hard to prove it, just by quoting the DSA and their candidates," Maher warned his viewers. "It gives me no pleasure to have to do this."
He went on to lament the steady stream of radical newcomers being celebrated by Democrats. "Not a week goes by where I don't read about some newly chosen, exciting new face in the Democratic Party. And then when that face opens its mouth, the Communist Manifesto or some other crazy s*** comes out," he continued. "Again, let's just read the quotes."
Maher zeroed in on the DSAs own platform language as a textbook example of Marxist thinking. "The DSA platform says ... you work as much as you are able, and no more than needed," he pointed out. "If that was any closer to Karl Marx's dictum, from each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs, they'd be sued for plagiarism."
The segment did not stop there, as Maher cited New York City politician Zohran Mamdani quoting Karl Marx verbatim and highlighted the views of leftist commentator Hasan Piker. He also noted Chevaliers explicit talk of seizing the means of production, a phrase that historically leaves little doubt about ideological intent.
"I think they want to seize the means of production," Maher quipped, underscoring the obvious. "Now maybe you missed that in school, or missed school altogether, but that's communism. That's communism, which we tried, and it doesn't work."
The host then broadened his critique to the broader agenda of the far-left activists now winning Democratic primaries. "People are actually getting elected now, who literally don't think we should have police, or prisons, or borders," the exasperated host said, describing a platform that would dismantle the basic institutions of law, order, and national sovereignty.
Maher also made clear that his own political allegiance is no longer guaranteed. He told his audience that his vote is "in play," echoing the recent political journey of Elon Musk, who has publicly broken with Democrats over their radical turn.
"I'm not voting for anyone who thinks the wrong side won the Cold War, or cheers for the Intifada like it's the World Cup. It's so ironic, from the people who obsess about colonization. You know what's being colonized now?" he asked. "The Democratic Party."
If Maher holds to that standard, his ballot will not be cast for the party he once reflexively supported, especially as it continues to embrace figures who romanticize communist regimes and radical movements. His remarks suggest that Democrats leftward lurch is not just alienating conservatives and independents, but also older-school liberals who still believe in Western civilization and basic common sense.
Mahers methodusing the lefts own words against themproved effective not only in exposing the DSAs agenda but also in another segment targeting Dr. Anthony Fauci. Throwing the insane asylum's own quotes back at them is a very effective tool, the commentary noted, and Maher applied it with equal vigor to the former COVID czar.
Reading from Faucis own diary, Maher highlighted the self-congratulatory tone that fueled public distrust. Fauci: The nurses went absolutely wild to see me. They were squealing and laughing and clapping. It was something to behold. He continued with more excerpts: Fauci: Many print profiles and features on me. Ridiculous. Too many to count. and Fauci: Im such a valued spokesperson and a good communicator.
Maher did not mince words in his assessment of the Fauci material, mocking the cult of personality that grew around the bureaucrat during the pandemic. Even Bill Maher says Faucis diary is the most embarrassing release of anything he has seen since Anthony Weiner got caught sending a d*ck pic to a college student. He [Fauci] is just so susceptible to flattery. And for the people who say Trump lives by people kissing his Maher suggested that Faucis ego and media adulation were every bit as troubling as the personality politics liberals claim to despise in Trump.
The HBO host also pointed to longtime Democratic strategist James Carville as another example of a party loyalist who has had enough. Maher noted that Carville, a rabid, lifetime Democrat, has publicly stated he cannot remain in a party that has become this radical and detached from reality.
"I am NOT going to be in the same party as Hasan Piker! I can tell you that right now!" Carville declared during an appearance on Fox, drawing a bright line between traditional Democrats and the socialist influencers now shaping the partys agenda. Maher then underscored just how far he believes things have gone by confessing, "How bad is it? I would vote for Sarah Palin before this s***."
For conservatives, Mahers remarks amount to a belated but welcome acknowledgment of what the right has been arguing for years: the Democratic Party is being colonized by open socialists and communists who reject American norms, borders, and institutions. And while Maher may not yet be ready to embrace the GOP fully, there will be no shortage of better, more grounded Republican candidates for him to consider in 2026 and 2028 than the radicals now dominating his old political home.
