Democrats are already signaling that if they regain power in Washington, they intend to use it to pursue President Donald Trump and rewrite the rules of governance in the process.
On MSNBCs All In, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) laid out a roadmap for an aggressive post-election agenda aimed squarely at the current administration, according to Breitbart. Host Chris Hayes framed the discussion with a sweeping denunciation, declaring, A drumbeat of headlines about what is unquestionably the most corrupt American administration in my lifetime and possibly ever.
Hayes pressed Raskin on what Democrats would actually do if they reclaimed the House majority, noting that obviously theres no theres no oversight thats going to happen now and conceding, we dont know if laws have been broken. He nonetheless described the administrations conduct as marked by a kind of incredible brazenness and flagrant behavior, asking, What what do you see as your role if Democrats win back a majority in Congress?
Raskin responded by insisting that Democrats are not merely waiting for an election to act. Well look, first of all, were not sitting on our hands now, he said, explaining that when Democrats learn of these things, we do everything in our power to get all the information we can.
He claimed that media exposure is already prompting internal dissent against the administration. And when we go out on TV or we go out in the public and newspaper articles are published, we then hear from whistleblowers, people on the inside who understand exactly how various, rip offs and schemes like this, are taking place, Raskin said, adding that Democrats are gathering the information we can, even though we dont control the gavels now.
Raskin made clear that a Democrat-controlled Congress would escalate dramatically, promising a sweeping inquiry into the administration once they have subpoena power. But, if and when we win and we, you know, begin to restore the rule of law, we will get to the bottom of exposing all of this corruption, and we will not be afraid to follow the path of accountability for anybody who has violated any existing laws or regulations, he vowed.
He went further, signaling that Democrats are prepared to expand federal power and codify new restrictions in response to conduct they simply dislike, even if it is not illegal. And if theyre simply, you know, violating the norms of the country and things that people would have thought completely outrageous before, then, were going to have to move, and we probably will have to move to legislate to prevent this kind of raw and rampant corruption and prostitution of our government, Raskin said, underscoring a partisan vision of reform that would empower Washington to police political norms as well as laws.
