Xavier Becerra, a longtime Democrat operative now seeking the governorship of California, has made clear he wants taxpayers to continue footing the bill for healthcare for illegal immigrants.
During a recent CNN appearance, Becerra openly defended preserving state-funded medical benefits for those in the country unlawfully, a stance that, according to Gateway Pundit, underscores how deeply embedded the Democratic Partys open-borders mindset has become in Californias political class. The exchange unfolded when host Elex Michaelson noted that Republican candidate Steve Hilton says he wants to take the undocumented off of healthcare rolls. Why do you want to keep them on there, and how much is that going to cost the state?
Becerra replied by personalizing the issue and downplaying the legal dimension of illegal immigration. He looks at them as people who dont have documents. I look at them as hard workers. I look at them as people like my parents. I am the son of immigrants. To me, I want you to build, help me build California. If youre working hard, I want you to have healthcare. I guess Steve Hilton doesnt care if they work really hard. He looks at their status, and thats about it.
Michaelson pushed back with the basic rule-of-law argument that many conservatives have long advanced. Well, he says that they broke the law. And he says that he immigrated here legally and that spending money to give somebody healthcare is incentivizing bad behavior.
Becerras response was striking not only for its dismissive tone toward legal immigration, but also for his admission that illegal immigrants are filling jobs across multiple sectors. He doesnt seem to mind that the price of food is a little lower because these are the folks that are picking the crops. He doesnt seem to mind that the places that you can buy to live in are places that these folks built. He doesnt seem to mind that theyre the folks that are taking care of probably one of his relatives, probably taking care of his yards. He seems to mind that they dont have documents, but he doesnt seem to mind that they do so much of the work in California.
In other words, Becerra effectively conceded that illegal labor is propping up key industries, undercutting American workers while Democrats insist taxpayers subsidize healthcare for those same workers. California, already burdened by soaring costs, rampant homelessness, and a steady exodus of middle-class families, can ill afford more of the same policies that reward lawbreaking and punish citizens who play by the rules. Voters who want a course correction toward secure borders, fiscal responsibility, and respect for legal immigration have a clear alternative in Steve Hilton, if they are willing to seize it.
