In a fervent critique, Republican Florida Representative Byron Donalds took aim at New York City's mayor-elect, Zohran Mamdani, for his audacious pledge to enforce international law over U.
S. statutes.
Mamdani, who has reiterated his commitment to uphold the International Criminal Court's arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should he visit the city, has sparked a contentious debate. This stance, which Mamdani has maintained since his campaign, has drawn significant criticism from conservative circles.
As reported by the Daily Caller, Donalds expressed his disapproval during an appearance on "Kudlow," emphasizing that Mamdani, upon taking office, will be required to swear an oath to uphold both the U.S. Constitution and the laws of New York. "Mamdani, I think, came out the other day and said that New York City is going to follow international law. Who the hell is he? He does not have the authority to do that," Donalds remarked to host Larry Kudlow.
He further stressed that the mayor-elect's allegiance must remain with the Constitution and the legal framework of the United States, as mandated by his oath of office.
Donalds' critique extended beyond Mamdani's legal overreach, highlighting what he perceives as the dangers of electing a radical figure with minimal practical experience. "What is this guy doing? This is what happens when you elect a radical whos never had a job, whos never done anything constructive in his life except be in the New York Assembly and go on TikTok," Donalds asserted.
He warned of the impending political and legal conflicts that Mamdani's stance could provoke, predicting that the mayor-elect would ultimately be unsuccessful in his endeavors.
The Florida representative also voiced concerns shared by many across the political spectrum regarding the Democratic Party's shift towards more extreme leftist policies. "Theyre getting a lot louder. Im not sure about larger because I think you have Democrat-registered voters in our country who love America, and theyre looking at this on the radical side of their party and saying, This is crazy. I didnt sign up for this,'" Donalds observed.
Mamdani's controversial positions are not limited to foreign policy. He has previously criticized Netanyahu, accusing him of conducting a "genocidal war" and implicating the United States as complicit. Despite briefly acknowledging the atrocities committed by Hamas, Mamdani's focus swiftly returned to condemning Israel.
On the domestic front, Mamdani's campaign was characterized by a bold left-wing agenda. His proposals include capping housing costs, instituting a $30 hourly minimum wage, and establishing city-run food markets and transit systems.
Additionally, he has advocated for increased taxes on high-income individuals and large corporations, alongside the creation of a new unit of social workers to address non-violent emergencies, replacing traditional police responses.
As Mamdani prepares to assume office, the clash between his progressive vision and the established legal and political norms of the United States looms large, setting the stage for a potentially tumultuous tenure.
