During a recent segment on MS NOW's "Katy Tur Reports," Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass attributed the lack of widespread use of the city's light rail system to immigration raids.
She also suggested that these raids could potentially exacerbate homelessness in the area.
In a conversation with host Katy Tur, the issue of housing affordability and public transportation was brought to the forefront. Tur recalled a discussion with former Mayor Eric Garcetti from approximately six years ago, where he expressed optimism about resolving Los Angeles' housing challenges.
Garcetti had envisioned a future where new affordable housing developments along the expanding light rail network would alleviate traffic congestion and make city living more accessible. However, as reported by Breitbart, this vision has yet to materialize. Tur inquired about the reasons behind the delay.
Mayor Bass responded by acknowledging the ongoing construction of the rail system and the evolving landscape of the city. She remarked, "Well, let me just tell you that the rail is being built, and, in different areas, things have changed. But, again, you know our city. Our city is massive."
Bass emphasized that prior to the immigration raids, public transportation in Los Angeles had seen record-high participation, marking a significant cultural shift. However, she noted that fear stemming from these raids has deterred people from using public transit.
When pressed further on the housing issue, Bass expressed her concerns about the potential rise in homelessness due to ICE raids, stating, "I am very worried about an increase in homelessness because of the ICE raids."
This ongoing situation raises questions about the impact of federal immigration policies on local communities and the broader implications for urban development and public welfare.
