The Democratic Party appears to be grappling with internal discord, lacking a unified leader, coherent strategy, or viable solutions.
Amidst this turmoil, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, often hailed as a progressive icon, has taken a moment to distance herself from a contentious primary challenge. "We're crazy, but maybe not that crazy," she remarked, underscoring her opposition to New York City Council member Chi Oss's potential bid to unseat House Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
Ocasio-Cortez's reaction to Oss's insurgent campaign was succinct: "Not aware." She further elaborated, "I certainly dont think a primary challenge to the leader is a good idea right now." This stance comes in the wake of Oss, a close associate of Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, hinting at a primary challenge against Jeffries.
However, even within the socialist faction, enthusiasm for such a move seems tepid. Mamdani, despite his affiliation with the Democratic Socialists of America alongside Oss, has maintained a cautious stance.
According to Sean Hannity, Mamdani has even advised Oss against pursuing the primary challenge. This development highlights the fractures within the so-called "youth takeover" of the Democratic Party, which is already showing signs of splintering following Mamdani's unexpected nomination and the party's electoral victories in New Jersey and Virginia. The young radicals, it seems, are struggling to maintain cohesion.
Jeffries, on his part, was initially hesitant to endorse Mamdani, only offering his support at the eleventh hour before early voting commenced. Oss, who represents parts of Bedford-Stuyvesant and North Crown Heights, was first elected in 2021 at the age of 23, riding the wave of the 2020 Black Lives Matter movement to become the first Gen Z member of the NYC Council.
He has now filed paperwork under "Chi Osse for Congress," signaling his interest in Brooklyn's 8th Congressional District, though an official announcement is yet to be made.
Oss's stance has shifted notably in recent weeks. Last month, he stated, "It would take a very dire situation in order for me to even consider spending the rest of my 20s in DC Im not running for Congress." However, his tone changed on Monday when he posted on X, "Seems like were in a dire situation."
The socialist faction, once eager for a revolution, now appears to be retreating, as internal divisions and strategic missteps come to the fore.
