The Trump administration's decision to slash federal funding for the University of California (UC) system has sparked a legal backlash.
A lawsuit was filed on Tuesday by students, faculty, staff, and educator unions, alleging that the administration's actions are unconstitutional and un-American. The UC system, however, is not a party to the lawsuit.
According to the Daily Caller, the lawsuit was triggered by allegations from federal agencies that UC campuses have failed to address antisemitism and have continued to engage in racial discrimination in their admissions processes. The Trump administration has already withdrawn more than $500 million in federal funding from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and has recently proposed a settlement deal with a $1.2 billion price tag.
The lawsuit accuses the Trump administration of attempting to coerce higher education institutions to conform to its worldview. It states, Through a series of actions targeting institutions of higher education, the Trump administration is attempting to coerce colleges and universities across the country to do what the Trump administration cannot do directly itself: infringe on the speech rights of faculty, academic and other staff, and students.
The plaintiffs draw a parallel between the Trump administration's actions and the fascism that swept across Europe during World War II. They argue that the federal government is employing a strategy of "targeting, bullying, and unconstitutional actions" against higher education institutions nationwide.
Todd Wolfson, president of the American Association of University Professors, expressed his organization's support for the lawsuit. He stated, We will not stand by as the Trump administration destroys one of the largest public university higher education systems in the country and bludgeons academic freedom at the University of California, the heart of the revered free speech movement.
The White House, however, views the lawsuit as evidence that federal funds are not being used to serve the public at the university. Assistant White House press secretary Liz Huston told the Daily Caller News Foundation, If theres any sign that federal funds are padding unreasonable overhead fees rather than serving the American public, this is it. The American public deserves responsible stewardship of federal dollars, and the Trump Administration intends to fulfill that promise.
The UC system, while not a party to the lawsuit, has expressed concern over the funding cuts. A UC spokesman stated, Federal cuts to research funding threaten lifesaving biomedical research, hamper U.S. economic competitiveness and jeopardize the health of Americans who depend on the Universitys cutting-edge medical science and innovation.
The lawsuit comes in the wake of a series of controversies surrounding UCLA. The university became infamous for being home to the Jew Exclusion Zone following anti-Israel protests on Oct. 7, 2023. The school recently settled a lawsuit over the event for nearly $6.5 million.
Additionally, UCLA has been accused of circumventing the Supreme Courts ruling against affirmative action policies by implementing outreach methods towards nonwhite students to achieve its desired racial ratio of students. The Department of Justice opened an investigation into these allegations in March.
This legal battle underscores the tension between the Trump administration's commitment to fiscal responsibility and the perceived threat to academic freedom and diversity in higher education. The outcome of this lawsuit could have far-reaching implications for the future of federal funding in higher education and the preservation of free speech and diversity on college campuses.
