"It's a singular privilege to be the first American president welcomed here. And you think about it, it's a lot of presidents, and this was the second state visit, and that's the [historic] first. And maybe that's going to be the last time. I hope it is, actually," Trump said, breaking the usual solemnity of such occasions.
He continued, "But this is truly one of the highest honors of my life. Such respect for you and such respect for your country. For many decades, His Majesty the King has epitomized the fortitude, nobility, and the spirit of the British monarchy and the British people."
Despite the initial frosty reception President Trump and Melania received upon their arrival in the UK, largely due to the strained relationship between the President and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the royal family ensured a grand welcome. The royal treatment included a ceremonial carriage ride, a sight to behold, as reported by RedState's Brandon Morse.
King Charles accompanied Trump in the Irish State Coach, a carriage reserved for ceremonial occasions, while First Lady Melania Trump and Queen Camilla rode in the Scottish State Coach. In a departure from protocol, Trump stepped in front of the King during a review of the troops, an action he was invited to undertake by King Charles himself, as per the Associated Press.
This moment of light-heartedness provided a welcome respite amidst the global turmoil following the assassination of Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk a week prior, and the ongoing political discord.
