A shocking incident unfolded in Bogota, Colombia, on Saturday, as Senator Miguel Uribe, a prominent figure in the upcoming presidential race, was shot while addressing a public gathering.
The 39-year-old senator, a representative of the center-right Centro Democrtico (Democratic Center), the largest opposition party in Colombia, is now battling for his life in a hospital.
As reported by RedState, Uribe, who had announced his intention to participate in next year's presidential election, was shot twice in Bogota's Fontibon district on Saturday afternoon. The Colombian General Prosecutor's Office confirmed the incident. A 15-year-old boy, found in possession of a Glock pistol, was apprehended by the police in connection with the shooting.
The disturbing event was captured on video, showing the moments leading up to the shooting and the ensuing chaos. The footage, however, does not depict the actual shooting or injury. A social media post accompanying the video read, "Urgent ???? Here is the moment of the attack on Dr. Miguel Uribe. What a pain for the homeland. Miserable government! Sensitive images."
Following the incident, Uribe was immediately rushed to the hospital for surgery. His wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, took to social media to update the public on his condition. "I am Maria Claudia Tarazona, Miguel's wife. Miguel is currently fighting for his life. Let us ask God to guide the hands of the doctors who are treating him. I ask everyone to join us in a chain of prayer for Miguel's life. I put my faith in God ????," she wrote.
The attack on Uribe has drawn widespread condemnation. Colombian President Gustavo Petro, in a broadcast statement on Saturday evening, denounced the attack and pledged to bring the perpetrators to justice. "No resource should be spared, not a single peso or a single moment of energy, to find the mastermind Wherever they live, whether in Colombia or abroad," Petro declared.
The attempted assassination also drew criticism from the United States. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a statement condemning the incident. "The United States condemns in the strongest possible terms the attempted assassination of Senator Miguel Uribe. This is a direct threat to democracy and the result of the violent leftist rhetoric coming from the highest levels of the Colombian government.
Having seen firsthand Colombias progress over the past few decades to consolidate security and democracy, it cant afford to go back to dark days of political violence. President Petro needs to dial back the inflammatory rhetoric and protect Colombian officials. We stand in prayer with Miguels family, loved ones, and his supporters. Those responsible for this attack must face justice," Rubio stated.
This incident underscores the volatile political climate in Colombia and the urgent need for measures to ensure the safety of its public officials.
As the investigation into the shooting continues, the world watches, hoping for Uribe's recovery and justice for this heinous act.
