In a bid to foster patriotism among the younger generation, a Massachusetts ice cream shop is offering free treats to children who can recite the Pledge of Allegiance.
The initiative is part of the national "I Pledge Project," a patriotic endeavor that the shop, Eskimo King, has been participating in for over a decade.
According to WJAR, the local NBC affiliate, the shop's owner, Nancy Diemoz, launched the promotion ahead of the Fourth of July. The offer is open to children up to the age of 12, who can earn their free ice cream by demonstrating their knowledge of the pledge. "My boss really wanted to get into it when they started taking the pledge out of schools. She wanted to bring patriotism back into businesses," shared Megan Medeiros, an employee at Eskimo King for eight years.
The promotion is held every Monday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. throughout July. Successful participants are rewarded with a choice of a vanilla or chocolate twist cone, adorned with red, white, and blue sprinkles.
Lauren Morra, a 17-year veteran at Eskimo King, spoke highly of Diemoz's commitment to the community. "Nancy, the owner, she saw it at an ice cream shop in Savannah and she loved the idea of bringing patriotism back into early age," Morra said. "Shes generous when it comes to the community. She sponsors a baseball team and shes always down to support raffles or anything thats going on."
Medeiros echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of teaching children the pledge and its significance. "I think its important to teach kids how to say the pledge and what the meaning behind it is," Medeiros said. "I know one of the reasons the owner Nancy wanted to keep this going, after all these years, is because she believes in being proud to be an American."
This initiative serves as a testament to the power of small businesses in promoting traditional values and fostering a sense of national pride.
