In a recent interview, former President Trump voiced his belief that President Biden will remain in the 2024 race, despite mounting pressure from his own party to step down following a widely criticized debate performance last month.
Trump, speaking to Fox News host Sean Hannity, suggested that Biden's determination to stay in the race is driven by his "ego."
"Biden may very well stay, and he's got an ego, and he doesn't want to quit. He doesn't want to do that. It just looks to me like that's what he wants," Trump stated.
According to Fox News, Biden has responded to the internal party pressure by reasserting his commitment to the race and his determination to defeat Trump in the upcoming election. In a letter to House Democrats, Biden emphasized his strong position within the party, citing the 14 million votes and nearly 3,900 delegates he has garnered so far.
"I wouldn't be running again if I did not absolutely believe I was the best person to beat Donald Trump in 2024," Biden wrote.
Trump, however, speculated that if Biden were to step down or be forced out, Vice President Kamala Harris would likely take his place. He criticized Harris's performance in office, particularly her handling of the border crisis.
"I think she's an ineffective person. She was in charge of the border, she's never been there, she didn't do a good job, and she hasn't done a job on a lot of things," Trump told Hannity.
Trump further suggested that the Democratic party might resort to invoking the 25th Amendment to remove Biden from the race, given the significant number of delegates he has already secured.
"Unless they use the 25th amendment, which they'd use in a different sense, he has all the power. He has the delegates. He doesn't have to get out. There's nothing they can do to get him out," Trump said. "So, he'll get the nomination."
The future of Biden's re-election campaign was the subject of a virtual meeting held by House Democrats over the weekend, following his poorly received performance at the CNN Presidential Debate. Senior congressional correspondent for Fox News, Chad Pergram, reported that several high-ranking Democrats expressed their wish for Biden to step aside during the meeting, which was convened by Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
Jeffries, however, publicly reaffirmed his support for Biden, stating, "My position has not changed."
As the political landscape continues to evolve, it appears that Biden and Trump are set to face off once again in a debate scheduled for September.
