In a recent announcement by Iran's state television, it was reported that a senior general of Iran's Revolutionary Guard, Gen. Vajihollah Moradi, has passed away following an 'illness.'
Moradi held a prominent position as one of the commanders of the Guard's foreign wing.
Moradi was also a close associate of Gen. Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Baghdad in 2020. The loss of these two influential figures marks a significant blow to Iran's military leadership.
The state television further reported that a funeral ceremony for Gen. Moradi is scheduled to take place in the northern city of Babolsar on Sunday. It is not uncommon for Iran to conduct public funerals for its soldiers who have fallen in Syria, despite official claims that Iranian forces are present in the country solely in an advisory capacity.
Iran has been a staunch regional supporter of Syrian President Bashar Assad throughout the protracted civil war in Syria. This alliance has come at a high cost, with hundreds of Iranian forces losing their lives in the Syrian conflict. The death of Gen. Moradi adds to the growing list of Iranian casualties, underscoring the country's deep involvement in the region's geopolitical struggles.
