Moscow will not continue to honor a historic nuclear arms treaty that it entered with the United States in 2011.
This is because President Putin of Russia has stated that his country will pause the treaty now. Putin says that this is because of Bidens surprise visit to Ukraine this week.
The Daily Caller reports that the United States accused Russia of not honoring its portion of the treaty known as New START this January. This treaty sets caps on the number of nuclear weapons that each country can have in its position. The United States says that Russia would not allow inspectors into its facilities to ensure that it was honoring its portion of the agreement as was laid out in the treaty itself. Per the terms of the treaty, the United States is allowed to perform routine inspections, according to CNN.
Putin told a government assembly in Russia the following: They want to deal us a strategic defeat and are meddling with our nuclear facilities. In this context, I have to declare today that Russia is suspending its participation in the Treaty on Strategic Offensive Arms.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the State Department reported to Congress that Russia had rejected attempts to discuss noncompliance issues related to the inspections set up as part of the agreement between the United States and Russia.
According to the Wall Street Journal reporting, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that Putins decision is both unfortunate and very irresponsible, according to the Wall Street Journal reports. Their reporting added that Blinken said the following: But of course, we remain ready to talk about strategic arms limitations at any time with Russia, irrespective of anything else going on in the world or in our relationship, and I think it matters that we continue to act responsibly in this area.
The Daily Caller reports that Putin reported that he would test nuclear weapons if the United States decides to do the same. According to Reuters, Putin suggested that the United States was planning on conducting nuclear weapons tests. He also blamed the United States for using the special military operation as an excuse to try to destroy Moscow.
Former President Barack Obama had negotiated the agreement on nuclear weapons with Russia after the previous nuclear arms deal with Russia expired earlier. Now, all of the nuclear deals that the United States has struck with Russia are all up for debate.
