Rex Heuermann, the accused serial killer in the Gilgo Beach case, is expected to face a fourth murder charge for the death of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, according to a report.
Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney will announce the new charges once they are unsealed in court in Riverhead, as reported by NBC News.
Heuermann, 60, was already named the prime suspect in Brainard-Barnes' murder when he was charged in connection with the other "Gilgo Four" slayings of sex workers found on Long Island's beach in December 2010. Brainard-Barnes, who went missing in 2007 at the age of 25, was discovered bound by a distinctive belt stamped with the initials "WH" or "HM." Prosecutors have previously argued that the belt could have belonged to Heuermann's grandfather, William Heuermann.
Heuermann, a married father of two and a New York City architect, was arrested in July of this year in connection with the notorious "Gilgo Four" case. Investigators were able to identify Heuermann as a suspect after DNA from victim Megan Waterman's hair matched his DNA, which was obtained from a discarded pizza crust in January.
In addition to Waterman, Heuermann has been charged with the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, 24, and Amber Lynn Costello, 27. Their remains were found wrapped in burlap near where Brainard-Barnes was discovered. All four women are believed to have been advertising as sex workers when they disappeared between 2007 and 2010.
The arrest of Heuermann comes after a years-long investigation into the discovery of over 10 sets of human remains along Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach in Suffolk County between December 2010 and April 2011. Suffolk County established a special Gilgo Beach Homicide Investigation Task Force in February 2022.
