In a recent interview with MSNBC, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre defended President Joe Biden's policy approach, stating that he has "always, always put equity at the center of every policy he's put forward!".
This statement was made in response to questions regarding the struggling economy and the challenges Americans are facing with rising gas and grocery prices.
The press secretary was questioned about a recent poll indicating a dip in support for Biden, with more Latino voters now favoring Donald Trump by a margin of five points. Rather than directly addressing the poll results, Jean-Pierre shifted the conversation to the contentious 2020 election and Biden's economic record, reiterating that "the President has always put equity at the center of every policy he's put forward!"
Jean-Pierre further elaborated, "Because we understand that many communities have been left behind. We're not trying to do the trickle-down economics." She asserted that Biden's focus has been on bolstering the middle class and ensuring no one is left behind. Regarding Biden's 2020 supporters who may be disappointed with his performance, she stated, "We're going to continue to have those conversations to let that strong coalition know what we have done in the almost three years of this administration."
The press secretary defended the state of the economy under Biden's leadership, asserting that both the country and the economy are moving in the "right direction."
Since assuming office in January 2021, the Biden administration has prioritized equity, particularly racial and LGBTQ+ equity. An executive order was introduced aimed at "advancing racial equity and support for underserved communities through the federal government." The President has urged all federal agencies to develop and implement policies promoting equity across all sectors.
The 2021 executive order declared, "Affirmatively advancing equity, civil rights, racial justice, and equal opportunity is the responsibility of the whole of our Government. Because advancing equity requires a systematic approach to embedding fairness in decision-making processes, executive departments and agencies (agencies) must recognize and work to redress inequities in their policies and programs that serve as barriers to equal opportunity."
In 2023, the administration issued a similar executive order to further advance "racial equity and support for underserved communities."
