In his latest Netflix special, The Dreamer, comedian Dave Chappelle humorously critiqued California's laws that allow men to be housed in women's prisons.
Chappelle joked about identifying as a woman to be placed in a women's jail if he were ever sentenced.
"God forbid I ever go to jail, but if I do, I hope its in California, because as soon as the judge sentences me Ill be like before he sentences me I just want the court to know I identify as a woman. Send me to a womens jail," Chappelle quipped.
He continued his jest, imagining his behavior in a women's prison, which was met with laughter from the audience. "And as soon as I get in there Im gonna be doin, 'give me your fruit cocktail b*tch before I knock your motherf*cking teeth out, Im a girl, just like you b*tch. Come over here and suck this girl d*ck I got, dont make me explain myself, Im a girl,'" Chappelle said.
Chappelle also drew parallels between the transgender movement and method acting. He recalled an encounter with comedian Jim Carrey on the set of the 1999 film Man on the Moon. Carrey had fully assumed the persona of the late American entertainer Andy Kaufman, even when not filming.
"Jim Carrey was so immersed in that role, that from the moment he woke up to the time he went to bed at night he would live his life as Andy Kaufman. I didnt know that. When they cut, he was still Andy Kaufman, so much so that everybody on the crew called him Andy," Chappelle recounted.
Chappelle expressed his disappointment at not being able to meet Carrey as himself, but rather as Kaufman. "Anyway, I say all that to say thats how trans people make me feel," Chappelle concluded, earning a round of applause from the audience.
Chappelle faced backlash in 2021 following his special The Closer, where he criticized the transgender movement and defended Harry Potter author JK Rowling's assertion that biological sex is real.
