Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong recently made headlines for altering the lyrics to the band's hit song, "American Idiot," in order to criticize Donald Trump and his supporters.
The incident occurred during ABC's annual Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve. In response, Elon Musk, owner of X, took to the platform to criticize Green Day for what he perceived as a shift in their stance.
"Green Day goes from raging against the machine to milquetoastedly raging for it," Musk wrote on X, accompanied by laughing emojis.
During their performance at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Green Day substituted the original lyrics, "I'm not a part of the redneck agenda," with "I'm not a part of the MAGA agenda." This alteration prompted a small cheer from the California crowd, showing support for the band's anti-Trump message.
This is not the first time Green Day has incorporated the "MAGA" reference into their lyrics. According to Fox News, they previously used the "MAGA Agenda" lyrics during the 2019 iHeartRadio festival.
Green Day has a history of targeting Trump. In August, they released a t-shirt featuring Trump's mugshot with the word "nimrod" written in a circle covering his face. All proceeds from the sales of this shirt were donated to charity.
During the 2016 American Music Awards, Armstrong chanted "No Trump, no KKK, no Fascist USA" while performing their song "Bang Bang." This chant is commonly heard at far-left protests.
Green Day's recent alteration of their lyrics and their ongoing criticism of Trump demonstrate their commitment to expressing their political views through their music. While some applaud their activism, others, like Elon Musk, question the band's consistency in their message.
