The recent decision by the Colorado Supreme Court to remove Donald Trump from the state's 2024 presidential primary ballot has the potential to serve as a fundraising opportunity for the former president and bolster his standing within the Republican Party, according to a prominent GOP advisor.
Karl Rove, a former senior advisor during George W. Bush's administration, expressed his views on Fox News' "The Story" on Saturday, stating, "It serves to energize the Trump supporters and to give the former president a chance to raise more money from people who are suddenly going to be angry about what's going on... This does not look fair, does not look appropriate. And the response is going to be to drive up the president's - the former president's numbers."
The 4-3 ruling, issued on Tuesday evening, invoked Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment, commonly referred to as the Insurrection Clause or Disqualification Clause, which prohibits individuals involved in "insurrection or rebellion" from holding office. The Democrat-appointed justices on Colorado's highest court determined that Trump's actions on January 6, 2021, constituted "overt, voluntary, and direct participation in the insurrection."
However, the Colorado decision has been temporarily suspended until January 4 to allow Trump's legal team to file an appeal with the US Supreme Court, a course of action they have already pledged to pursue.
Rove also highlighted the potential for Democrats to be seen as hypocritical, pointing out several former Democratic lawmakers who could have faced disqualification under the insurrection clause. One such example is Alexander Hamilton Stephens, the former Confederate Vice President and Georgia Democrat who was elected to the House of Representatives after the Civil War. Stephens ultimately resigned from the House to become the governor of Georgia.
The Colorado Supreme Court's decision has not only raised questions about the fairness and appropriateness of the ruling but also has the potential to galvanize Trump's supporters and provide him with a platform to raise additional funds. As the legal battle continues, both sides will be closely watching the outcome and its implications for the future of Trump's political career.
