President Biden unequivocally stated on Wednesday that former President Trump was a supporter of the insurrection that took place on January 6, 2021.
This statement came in the wake of a court ruling that barred Trump from appearing on Colorado's ballots.
Upon his arrival in Milwaukee, President Biden was queried about the Colorado case, to which he chose not to comment. However, when questioned about Trump's role in the insurrection, Biden was forthright. "We saw it all," he declared. "Now whether the 14th Amendment applies, let the court make that decision. But he certainly supported an insurrection. No question about it. None. Zero," he added. "And he seems to be doubling down on about everything."
The President was in Wisconsin to underscore his administration's commitment to Black-owned businesses.
The 4-3 ruling in Colorado, which occurred on Tuesday, is on hold until January 4 due to anticipated appeals. The decision was not unanimous, with three justices on the Colorado Supreme Court dissenting.
"We do not reach these conclusions lightly," the majority of the court penned. "We are mindful of the magnitude and weight of the questions now before us. We are likewise mindful of our solemn duty to apply the law, without fear or favor, and without being swayed by public reaction to the decisions that the law mandates we reach."
In a prior ruling, Colorado District Judge Sarah B. Wallace permitted Trump to remain on the ballot, but she determined that Trump "engaged in insurrection" due to his involvement in the Capitol riot on January 6.
Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold pledged to "continue to follow court guidance on this important issue." She further noted, "The Colorado Supreme Court has ruled that Donald Trump is barred from the Colorado ballot for inciting the January 6 insurrection and attempting to overturn the 2020 Presidential Election. This decision may be appealed."
The 14th Amendment, which is at the heart of the matter, prohibits anyone who has engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the United States from holding any office, civil or military, under the United States or any state.
