A recent survey by Rasmussen Reports indicates that the majority of American voters consider abortion a significant issue for the 2024 presidential election, with the Democratic party perceived as more capable of addressing this matter.
The poll reveals that 48% of voters deem abortion an "important" subject for the upcoming election, while 29% regard it as "somewhat important." This perception transcends political affiliations, with 85% of Democrats, 71% of Republicans, and 71% of independents acknowledging the issue's importance.
When asked which party they trust more to handle the abortion issue, Democrats held an 11-point advantage over Republicans. 47% of voters expressed more trust in the Democratic party's handling of abortion, compared to 36% who favored the Republicans.
The survey also showed party loyalty, with 85% of Democratic voters and 73% of Republican voters trusting their respective parties on the issue. However, independent voters were divided, with 36% favoring Democrats, 33% favoring Republicans, and 31% uncertain.
In terms of personal beliefs, 54% of voters identified as pro-choice, while 38% identified as pro-life. Among Democrats, 75% identified as pro-choice and 20% as pro-life. Conversely, 60% of Republican voters identified as pro-life, and 33% as pro-choice. Among independents, 53% identified as pro-choice, and 36% as pro-life.
The poll, conducted on November 8, 9, and 12, surveyed 987 likely US voters and has a margin of error of 3%.
The survey's results come at a critical time, with the 2024 presidential election less than a year away. Current polling suggests a potential rematch between Joe Biden and Donald Trump. The first caucus in Iowa is just two months away.
The poll's release also coincides with significant developments in abortion rights. In the 2023 election, Ohio voted to enshrine abortion rights into the state's constitution. This occurred over a year after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade, returning the decision on abortions to individual states.
The ruling triggered widespread protests across the United States, including the firebombing of multiple pro-life centers.
