The U.S. State Department issued a dire warning on Monday when it made it clear that all American citizens should leave Russia immediately or face false arrest.
Fox News reports that the State Department is concerned about an escalating war in Ukraine, and things may only worsen now.
The U.S. embassy in Moscow stated the following: "U.S. citizens residing or traveling in Russia should depart immediately."
and
"Exercise increased caution due to the risk of wrongful detentions."
They also put it very straightforward when the department simply stated, "do not travel to Russia." This was a stark warning to all Americans who might have thought it could be a good idea to go to Russia. It is not a good idea, and anyone who thinks they should do something like that should step back and reconsider their entire thought process. They should go back to the safety and security of the United States at this time.
Any American citizens in Russia should try their best to make sure they get themselves out of the country to maintain their security and keep themselves protected for the sake of their families. It is far past time to ensure they have cleared out of the country, but this dire warning makes it even more straightforward.
The Embassy added this vital information while discussing what American citizens should do in these circumstances:
"Russian security services have arrested U.S. citizens on spurious charges, singled out U.S. citizens in Russia for detention and harassment, denied them fair and transparent treatment, and convicted them in secret trials or without presenting credible evidence."
Fox News Digital could not get an immediate comment back from the Embassy about why the warning was issued explicitly at that time. It is unclear what specifically about this moment has made the situation in Russia even more dangerous for American citizens than it already was. Everyone would like more clarity on this issue, but it is unclear at this time why it is so dangerous to be in Russia at this time specifically.
