Disney's live-action remake of Snow White, featuring Rachel Zegler, has been postponed by a year to 2025, amid a barrage of negative publicity that has plagued the production in recent times.
The film is now set to hit the big screen on March 21, 2025, a significant shift from its initial release date of March 22, 2024.
The entertainment conglomerate has yet to provide an official explanation for the delay, and has refrained from attributing it to the ongoing Hollywood actors' strike, which could have served as a plausible excuse.
The remake of Snow White has been the subject of widespread criticism following the leak of unauthorized on-set images. These photos depicted the iconic "seven dwarves" as a diverse group of grungy hipsters, with only one appearing to be an actual dwarf. This unexpected portrayal sparked a wave of derision on social media.
In an attempt to control the narrative, Disney unveiled the first official still from the film on Friday. The image features the protagonist surrounded by seven figures, seemingly computer-animated, who are presumed to be the dwarves. However, the identities of the characters in the previously leaked photos remain a mystery, as does their presence in the final version of the film.
Adding to the controversy is the film's lead, Rachel Zegler, who has been at the center of a public relations debacle for Disney. The actress came under fire when past videos surfaced in which she disparaged the original 1937 Snow White. Zegler criticized the Prince character as a creepy stalker and dismissed the notion of women yearning for romance.
Asserting a departure from the traditional narrative, Zegler stated, "Its no longer 1937." She added, "Shes not gonna to be saved by the prince, and shes not gonna be dreaming about true love. Shes dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be, and the leader her late father told her that she could be if she was fearless, fair, brave, and true.
Further fueling the fire, Zegler, while on the SAG-AFTRA picket line in August, demanded to be "paid for every hour" that the Disney film is streamed.
