Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg has recently drawn attention for her stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict.
The 20-year-old, known for her passionate advocacy against climate change, took to social media on Friday to call for an end to Israel's security action against Hamas.
Thunberg's post did not reference the recent attacks on Israelis or the hostage situation involving Palestinian militants. Nor did she mention the recent jihadist attack in Brussels that claimed the lives of two of her fellow Swedes. Instead, she posted a photo of herself holding a sign that read, "Stand with Gaza," accompanied by a caption that called for solidarity with Palestine and Gaza.
The caption read, "Today we strike in solidarity with Palestine and Gaza. The world needs to speak up and call for an immediate ceasefire, justice and freedom for Palestinians and all civilians affected." Thunberg also included the hashtags "#FreePalestine #IStandWithPalestine #StandWithGaza #FridayForFuture."
In the photo, Thunberg was joined by three other individuals, one of whom held a sign that read, "Climate justice now!" with an image of a fist painted in the colors of the Palestinian flag. Another individual held a sign that read, "This Jew stands with Palestine."
In a subsequent post, Thunberg suggested that her followers could show their support by engaging with various organizations, including the Palestinian Youth Movement, the Adalah Justice Project, and IfNotNow. These organizations have been known to criticize Israel's policies and actions, with the Palestinian Youth Movement even accusing Israel of genocide.
Thunberg's posts have sparked a wave of criticism and mockery. Eylon Levy, a spokesman for the Israeli prime minister's office, pointed out the irony of Thunberg's stance, given Hamas's use of fossil fuels. Israel's embassy in Berlin questioned Thunberg's priorities, while Noam Blum, chief technology officer at Tablet magazine, and DeepCube co-founder Eli Daive criticized Thunberg's alignment with anti-Israeli sentiments.
Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro also weighed in, stating, "She is no longer a child, so we can mock her as the ignorant, irritating moron she is now."
Arye Sharuz Shalicar, spokesman for the Israeli army, told Politico, "Whoever identifies with Greta in any way in the future, in my view, is a terror supporter. ... Because what Greta is doing, that she is now showing solidarity with Gaza while not saying a word about the massacres of Israelis, shows that she is actually not in favor of the Palestinians, but that she is sweeping the terror of the Palestinians or Hamas and Islamic Jihad under the table as if it did not exist."
Thunberg's stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict is not the only issue where she aligns with progressive Democrats in Congress. She also supports abortion rights in America, mass migration, and the use of climate change as a catalyst for systemic changes in Western society. She also advocates for reducing reliance on affordable energy in the West.
