Cenk Uygur, a prominent progressive media figure and host of "The Young Turks," has made a surprising announcement: he will be running for President in an effort to pressure President Joe Biden to withdraw from the race.
Uygur believes that Biden's chances of winning the presidential race are slim, stating that he has "a 10% chance at most." In his declaration, Uygur emphasized the urgency of changing course, asserting that "Donald Trump is an actual fascist."
While Uygur is determined to win the presidency, he also sees himself as a proxy for any other candidate who shares his goal of removing Biden from the race. "We have got to get Biden outta the race," Uygur emphasized. He likened his role to that of Paul Revere, sounding the alarm and pressuring the president to exit the race.
However, Uygur's presidential aspirations face a significant constitutional hurdle. As a naturalized citizen, he is ineligible to hold the office of president according to the U.S. Constitution, which states that only "natural born Citizens" or citizens at the time of the Constitution's adoption are eligible for the presidency.
Uygur, however, rejects this notion and argues that case law supports his eligibility. He wrote on X, "Naturalized citizens can run for President. Winning this case in the Supreme Court is going to get rid of the albatross around the neck of 25 million Americans who are naturalized citizens. The Supreme Court has already said we have the same exact rights."
Meanwhile, Biden remains on track to become the Democratic Party's nominee for the 2024 presidential election. Recent polls show him leading against contenders Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Marianne Williamson. Kennedy, in response, has announced that he will now run as an independent candidate.
