On Tuesday, a letter was dispatched to Attorney General Merrick Garland by House Republicans, alleging that the legal team of Hunter Biden is attempting to "intimidate and harass" two whistleblowers from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) involved in the tax investigation of Biden.
The whistleblowers, Gary Shapley and Joseph Ziegler, have recently claimed political meddling in the prosecutorial decisions throughout the extensive federal investigation into the President's son.
The letter, penned by Representatives Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), Jason Smith (R-Mo.), and James Comer (R-Ky.), accuses Bidens attorneys of "slandering" Shapley and Ziegler as "disgruntled" and "urging" the Department of Justice to prosecute them.
"Federal law protects whistleblowers from retaliation, and efforts to intimidate these whistleblowers raise serious concerns about potential obstruction of the Committees investigation," the letter stated. It further requested information about any attempts by Hunter Bidens legal team to encourage the Department to take action against the IRS whistleblowers.
The letter cited a New York Times article, which reported that Bidens legal team had argued to the Justice Department that the whistleblowers "broke the law and should be prosecuted" by revealing details about the investigation to Congress.
The Republicans have set a deadline of 5:00 p.m. on September 26 for the DOJ to produce any letters or communications from Bidens lawyers advocating for the investigation or prosecution of Shapley or Ziegler. They also requested any documents and communications between Biden's attorneys and the DOJ relating to a criminal investigation or prosecution of the two whistleblowers.
Attorney General Garland is set to testify before the House Judiciary Committee in a standard oversight hearing on September 20. Fox News has reportedly reached out to the DOJ and Bidens attorneys, Abbe Lowell and Chris Clark, for comments.
The letter was sent on the same day that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) is anticipated to endorse an impeachment inquiry into President Biden for his alleged involvement in his son's business affairs.
