Conservative critics have taken aim at Rep.
Cori Bush, a member of the progressive "Squad" group in the House, for her recent tribute to Michael Brown.
In a tweet marking the ninth anniversary of Brown's killing, Bush blamed racism and white supremacy for his death, sparking backlash from conservatives.
"Today is the 9th anniversary of Mike Browns killing," Bush tweeted on Wednesday. "He would be alive today if the institutions of racism and white supremacy were eradicated. He should be alive today. We will never forget. We will continue to fight for justice and accountability."
However, conservatives were quick to point out additional details surrounding the incident, including the fact that Brown had robbed a convenience store, physically assaulted a police officer, and attempted to grab his gun before being fatally shot.
Political commentator Matt Walsh criticized Bush's tweet, highlighting the persistence of the left's narrative surrounding Michael Brown. "This only goes to show how the Left plays the long game," Walsh tweeted. "The whole Michael Brown narrative has been definitively exposed as a hoax, but they will keep repeating it year after year until we get tired of correcting it and the truth is forgotten by history."
Stephen L. Miller, a writer for the Spectator, echoed Walsh's sentiments, tweeting, "He choked a bodega owner in the act of shoplifting and attempted to assault the responding police officer while grabbing his firearm. Eric Holder's justice department cleared the officer of any wrongdoing."
The shooting of Michael Brown by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, nine years ago ignited widespread outrage and sparked riots, with activists claiming it was an example of police brutality. The incident led to significant civil unrest in Ferguson, with protesters chanting "hands up, don't shoot" in reference to witnesses who falsely claimed that Brown had his hands up when he was shot.
However, an investigation conducted by former President Obama's Justice Department in March 2015 concluded that the police officer, Darren Wilson, had acted in self-defense. The investigation cleared Wilson of any prosecutable violations under federal criminal rights statutes.
The report from the Obama DOJ stated, "Although there are several individuals who have stated that Brown held his hands up in an unambiguous sign of surrender prior to Wilson shooting him dead, their accounts do not support a prosecution of Wilson." It further highlighted inconsistencies in witness accounts, noting that some were inconsistent with physical and forensic evidence or changed over time without credible explanation.
Conservatives argue that Bush's tweet perpetuates a false narrative surrounding the Michael Brown case and fails to acknowledge the findings of the Obama DOJ investigation. They contend that focusing solely on racism and white supremacy overlooks the actions of Brown and the subsequent legal conclusions.
