The authorities have confirmed that the body of a 27-year-old swimmer who went missing last weekend on Lake Lanier, a Georgia lake north of Atlanta, has been recovered.

Leonardo Martinez disappeared while swimming on Saturday, and his body was discovered nearly 100 feet from shore on Thursday near Van Pugh Park. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources and FOX 5 have provided this information.

In a separate incident on the same day, a 61-year-old boater named Tracey Stewart also went missing after diving off a boat and failing to resurface. Stewart's body was reportedly found later that night.

Another tragic incident occurred on July 31 when 24-year-old Thomas Milner died after jumping off a dock at the lake and being electrocuted. According to FOX 5, a man who rescued Milner from the water described feeling a burning sensation, which he recognized as an electric shock. The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office stated that the man swam ashore, turned off the power box, and re-entered the water to pull Milner onto the dock.

Electric shock drowning, a phenomenon in which electrical current leaks into the water, rendering swimmers incapacitated, is a serious concern. The Electric Shock Drowning Prevention Association, an organization dedicated to raising awareness and educating people about the risks of electric shock in water, explains that this can lead to tragic outcomes.

These recent deaths add to the long list of fatalities at Lake Lanier since its creation in 1956. According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, between 1994 and 2022, 216 people have lost their lives at the reservoir, which is also the largest body of water in the state, covering 39,000 acres. This information was reported by USA Today.
