A South Korean man has been taken into custody after reportedly driving into a crowd of 13 pedestrians and subsequently stabbing nine of them.
The incident took place near a subway station in Seongnam, just south of Seoul, the capital of South Korea. While the motive of the perpetrator remains unknown, local media has reported that he appeared to be suffering from mental health issues.
According to Police Commissioner General Yoon Hee-keun, this attack differs from traditional crimes driven by personal resentment. He described it as "an act of terrorism in that anyone can become a victim."
Law enforcement officials have stated that the suspect, believed to be in his early 20s, drove his car into a group of 13 pedestrians, hitting four of them. Afterward, he allegedly exited his vehicle and proceeded to stab nine additional victims. Twelve people were transported to a hospital for treatment, while one victim, a man in his 60s, tragically succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities were able to apprehend the suspect within 10 minutes of the incident. He is currently in custody and undergoing a mental health evaluation.
