Former Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund has made explosive claims in an interview with Tucker Carlson, suggesting that there may have been a cover-up regarding the January 6 protests at the U.S. Capitol.
Sund's interview, which was initially kept under wraps by Fox News, has now been released by the National Pulse, shedding new light on the events of that day.
In a conversation with Russell Brand, Carlson explained that he became interested in the January 6 protests due to the amount of misinformation surrounding them. "The more time has passed, it becomes really obvious that core claims they made about January 6 were lies," Carlson said. He also expressed his concern about the amount of lying that took place surrounding the events of that day.
Carlson had previously aired previously unreleased footage of the protests on Fox News, which appeared to contradict the narrative that had been carefully constructed by the media and the Jan. 6 committee. In his conversation with Brand, Carlson referred to an interview he conducted with Sund, which was never aired on Fox News as he was fired before it could be broadcast.
Sund, who had been the head of the U.S. Capitol Police from 2019 through the protests, resigned on January 7 amid claims of a failure of leadership. However, in a letter to then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other congressional leaders, Sund stated that there was no indication of a well-coordinated, armed assault on the Capitol. He also noted that the intelligence community had seemingly missed the signs of an impending attack.
Sund further revealed that the Capitol Police had been set up to fail. He explained that he had requested permission from House and Senate security officials to bring in the National Guard days before the protests, but his request was denied. He also stated that he had asked for the National Guard multiple times during the protests, but was repeatedly denied until they finally arrived at 5:40 p.m. on January 6.
During his interview with Tucker Carlson, Sund expressed his frustration, saying, "If people were reporting the intelligence correctly, if I was allowed to do my job as the chief...we wouldn't be here. This didn't have to happen." He also suggested that there may have been a cover-up, stating, "Everything appears to be a cover-up...when you look at the information and intelligence they had, the military had, it's all watered down...I'm denied any support from National Guard in advance. I'm denied National Guard while we're under attack for 71 minutes."
Carlson pressed Sund on the possibility that the intelligence was intentionally hidden, to which Sund replied, "That's what I'm getting at...Could there possibly be actually...they kind of wanted something to happen? It's not a far stretch to begin to think that." Sund questioned the end goal of those involved and suggested that the events of January 6 have benefited the Democratic Party.
Sund's claims have raised serious concerns about the handling of the January 6 protests and the subsequent investigations. The National Pulse, which is releasing the interview in segments, has described it as "absolutely extraordinary." The next segment is expected to delve into the involvement of Ray Epps in the protests.
