A tragic incident has struck the South Carolina law enforcement community, as Detective Sgt.
Daniel Greene, a key figure in the Alex Murdaugh double-murder investigation, was involved in a fatal car crash that claimed the life of his 3-year-old daughter.
The Colleton County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) announced the heartbreaking news with "great sorrow."
The crash occurred when Greene, who was off-duty at the time, lost control of his county-issued SUV, causing it to veer off the road and collide with a tree. The accident took place around 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. Alongside his daughter, Greene's current wife and another child also sustained severe injuries, although they are not considered life-threatening.
Tragically, despite being airlifted to the Medical University of South Carolina, young Carter Greene could not be saved due to the severity of her injuries. The CCSO expressed their condolences for the loss of the officer's daughter, who he shared with his former wife, Ashley Taylor Greene.
Detective Sgt. Daniel Greene had been a veteran member of the CCSO and played a crucial role in the investigation into the June 2021 shooting deaths of Maggie Murdaugh, 52, and her son Paul, 22, on their family's Moselle estate.
According to the Greenville News, Greene was one of the first local officers to arrive at the scene. He later testified in court, contributing to the conviction of Alex Murdaugh, the husband and father responsible for the brutal slayings. Murdaugh is currently serving two consecutive life sentences and faces further legal proceedings for various financial crimes.
It is important to note that the tragic accident involving Greene occurred while he was not on duty, as confirmed by the CCSO. Despite the devastating loss, Greene updated his Facebook profile photo the day after the accident, featuring a picture of him and his late daughter.
The mother of the deceased girl, who now goes by the name Wiggins, shared a heart-wrenching tribute on Facebook, expressing her grief and disbelief at the sudden loss. Alongside a photo of her daughter smiling at the beach, she wrote, "I'll never understand why you had to leave us, or how we're supposed to live this life without you. I am so lost without you and I am so angry... You were taken from me way too soon. God knows I need you here. I just wish I could hear you say 'I love you more' one more time, and give you all the bear hugs in the world."
The entire community mourns the loss of Carter Greene and extends their deepest sympathies to Detective Sgt. Daniel Greene, his family, and loved ones during this unimaginably difficult time.
