A shocking incident unfolded in Memphis on Sunday when a woman was caught on surveillance footage allegedly robbing a man as he lay dying on his driveway.
The victim was identified as Mark LeSure, a retired homicide detective who had dedicated his life to serving his community. The suspect, Shuntae Daniels, now faces multiple charges in connection with the incident.
The Memphis police received a distress call around 8 a.m. on Sunday, reporting a man who had collapsed outside his residence in the southwestern part of town. When authorities arrived at the scene, they discovered the lifeless body of Mark LeSure, a 57-year-old retired detective who had spent decades on the force. Preliminary reports suggest that LeSure died of a heart attack.
Upon reviewing the surveillance footage captured by a nearby security camera, investigators noticed a woman, later identified as Shuntae Daniels, present at the scene around the time of LeSure's death. The footage revealed that Daniels had arrived at the residence with LeSure, and the two were engaged in a heated argument. Daniels later confessed to demanding gas money from LeSure, who went inside his house and retrieved $10. Tragically, as LeSure returned outside, he suffered a heart attack and collapsed.
Seizing the opportunity, Daniels allegedly entered LeSure's home and stole his cellphone and wallet. She then returned to the scene and rummaged through LeSure's pockets, ultimately taking the $10 in gas money that had fallen to the ground. Shockingly, after leaving the property, Daniels reportedly used LeSure's phone to transfer approximately $1,500 to herself in $200 increments. The surveillance footage also captured Daniels making a call on her cellphone, which was later traced back to her. The purpose of the call remains unclear, but Daniels can be heard saying, "We are going to see who knows the law."
When questioned about the stolen money, Daniels admitted to spending it on shoes and visits to the nail and hair salon, pocketing the rest. As a result, she now faces charges of aggravated burglary, two counts of theft of property, and identity theft. Daniels is currently in custody at the Shelby County jail, with her bond set at $100,000.
This is not the first time Daniels has found herself in legal trouble. Last year, she was accused of shooting at a car full of children parked outside a Taco Bell. The status of that case remains unknown.
Mark LeSure dedicated most of his life to serving his country and community. He served as a military police officer in the U.S. Army for ten years before joining the Memphis Police Department in 1992. Throughout his career, he earned a reputation as a highly respected homicide detective. LeSure had only recently retired from the force. Last year, he made headlines when he commented on a viral video that appeared to show several Memphis officers beating Tyre Nichols to death. LeSure emphasized the importance of experienced officers in diffusing such situations, stating, "Usually, when vets are there, things go differently because we have that experience to say, 'I understand youre mad, but you got to stop. You cant do this, it isnt right.'"
In the wake of his tragic death, friends and family remember LeSure as a dedicated police officer who had a passion for mentoring local youth. Neighbor Randie Fleming described him as "an upstanding guy" who "served his community" and had outreach ministries for young people nearby. LeSure's aunt, Rose LeSure-Jones, echoed these sentiments, calling him "one of the good guys" and expressing disbelief that he could meet such a tragic end. "Whatever it was, he didnt deserve this, he really didnt. He was a good guy. One of the good guys, really."
The nature of the relationship between LeSure and Daniels remains unclear. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident.
