Democratic socialist Janeese Lewis George has been elected mayor of Washington, D.C., according to Just The News.
With 83% of votes counted, the Associated Press projected Lewis George the winner with 84.3% of the vote. She defeated D.C. Statehood Green Party candidate Robert Gross and independent Rhonda Hamilton.
Lewis George, 38, is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, and the group's Metro D.C. chapter endorsed her. She is the sitting Ward 4 member of the D.C. Council, and her campaign touted her efforts to raise the minimum wage.
She will be the city's first new mayor since 2015, succeeding Muriel Bowser, who did not seek re-election after nearly 12 years in office. Lewis George is set to take office in January.
Her victory makes Washington the latest major city to elect a democratic socialist. She joins New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a DSA member, and Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson, who identifies as a democratic socialist but is not a member.
Lewis George campaigned on affordability, with pledges on housing, utility costs and universal child care, FOX 5 DC reported. She has also pledged to defend the District's home rule against threats of federal oversight from President Donald Trump.
