An illegal immigrant from Mexico has admitted in federal court that she fabricated a dramatic tale of being kidnapped at gunpoint by supposed bounty hunters outside a fast-food restaurant and coerced to self-deport."
According to Just The News, 43-year-old Yuriana Julia Palaez Caldern pleaded guilty Monday to one count of conspiracy to impede, obstruct, impair, and defeat the lawful function of Homeland Security Investigations within federal jurisdiction, as detailed in a Department of Justice press release. Prosecutors say the case underscores how activist narratives and media amplification can be weaponized against federal immigration enforcement, undermining the rule of law.
Court documents state that on June 25, 2025, Caldern told an acquaintance that immigration was taking her into custody in or near a fast-food restaurant and claimed officials had turned the lights on, threatened to break her window and were detaining her. She allegedly then called a member of a tenants rights group from a blocked number, repeating the false story that authorities had kidnapped her and were pressuring her to sign voluntary removal papers.
In the days that followed, Caldern continued to spread the story, which was eagerly picked up by media outlets and immigrant advocacy organizations. According to the DOJ, community organizers in Los Angeles even staged a press conference where protesters echoed Calderns account and demanded her release, while she was actually hiding in Bakersfield.
As a result of Calderns intentional lies, false information was reported to the media and law enforcement that Caldern had been kidnapped by masked men in plain clothes driving an unmarked vehicle, who were acting as federal agents or as surrogates of federal agents, the DOJ said in its statement. A sentencing hearing is set for Feb. 8, and Caldern now faces a statutory maximum of five years in federal prison, a stark reminder of the real-world consequences of politicized hoaxes aimed at discrediting immigration enforcement.
